  • Description

Swimming ... and Cynthia Woodhead, the brilliant United States 13-year-old, who last week won three freestyle events in Holland, was in superb form again, on Friday (10 February) on the opening day of the Tilt International meeting in Paris. In the women's 800 metres freestyle, she sped away from the field to win in a world's best time of eight minutes 27 point 25 seconds.

SYNOPSIS: It was a sensational performance from the young American, and had it been in a 50-metre pool, it would have been a new world record.

The record of eight minutes 31 point 30 seconds is held by Australia' Michelle Ford, and Woodhead was always threatening to better this time.

It was a case of Woodhead first, and the rest nowever. Even her compatriot, Kim Black, was falling further and further behind.

Cynthia passed the 400 metres mark in four minutes 13 point 68, and, from then on, a new world's best was formality.

It was all so easy. Woodhead first and Black next ... ten seconds behind.
