  • Description

The Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) met in Beirut last Saturday (10 June) where they decided to back by all means Iraq's Nationalisation of the Western-owned Iraq Petroleum Country (IPC).

It also commended that the member-countries' finance minsters meet in Baghdad to determine how to help Arab states needing financial aid as a result of the nationalisation.

The OAPEC conference follows Friday's meeting of the more powerful Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which also supported Iraq's move as a "lawful act of sovereignty to safeguard its legitimate interests."
The meeting was chaired by a member of the Bahrain delegation, and representatives from Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Libya, Qatar, Iraq, Syria and Kuwait were also present.

The IPC, meanwhile, has threatened to sue any nation buying crude oil from the nationalised fields in northern Iraq.
