THE LEBANESE CAPITAL OF BEIRUT WAS QUIET AND UNDER PARTIAL CURFEW TODAY (25 OCTOBER), FOLLOWING CIVIL DISTURBANCES AND A POLITICAL CRISIS THAT CAME AFTER CLASHES ON THE SYRIAN-LEBANESE BORDER, AS THE UNITED STATES CHARGE D'AFFAIRES IN ADEN, MR. WILLIAM EAGLETON, ARRIVED FROM THE SOUTHERN YEMEN REPUBLIC AFTER THAT COUNTRY HAD BROKEN OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED STATES.

ADEN'S DECISION TO BREAK OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WAS APPARENTLY TAKEN IN PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED UNITED STATES HOSTILITY TOWARDS PROGRESSIVE ARAB STATES.

MR. EAGLETON, WHO HAD JUST RETURNED TO HIS POST FROM HOLIDAY, WAS GIVEN 24 HOURS TO LEAVE ADEN. HE SAID THE EMBASSY STAFF HAD BEEN GIVEN 48 HOURS.

MEANWHILE, THREE PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND FOUR INJURED LAST NIGHT WHEN THEY TRIED TO BREAK INTO AN ARMOURY IN TRIPOLI, THE NORTH LEBANESE CITY THAT IS THE MAIN TROUBLE SPOT INT HE PRESENT POLITICAL CRISIS.
