TRANSCRIPT: "Little solar cells can make model aeroplane propeller spin or a portable radio play, as long as you don't the sun away. Most serious uses are on the verge of break-through. Whole buildings heated with solar panels as in this model of a building under construction at New Mexico State University. Building heat seems to be the major practical use of solar energy at this stage of development. The big drawback now is the high cost of collector materials, panels that absorb the sun's rays and heat water passing through the panels. Solar cells can produce electricity, but the process is very costly and not yet feasible on a large scale. Some companies are working on big electricity experiments using relatively cheap materials. This display, for example, using glass mirrors to pas rays of sun to a heat collector which turns water to steam and eventually to electricity. The unanswered question at this stage is on a big scale, relative to cost. Generally scientists believe solar electricity is something for the twenty-first century."

Background: An International Exposition on the potential uses of solar energy opened at the University of California, in Los Angels on Tuesday ( 29 July)
The focal point of the conference was on the use of solar energy converters to produce electricity for industry.

Other highlights included plans and methods to use the energy for air conditioning in office blocks and factories. On the domestic side, exhibitors showed how a single solar cell could run transistors, model aeroplane and other small machines.
