  • Description

Spanish police recaptured 22 out of the 29 urban guerillas who escaped form prison in the town of segovia on Monday (5 April) after a gun fight near the French border on Tuesday (6 April). One of the fugitives was killed.

Civil guard commander general Angel Campano said that two men who helped in the breakout and gave the guerillas guns were also caught. So too was a woman who drove the get-away truck from Segovia, near Madrid, to the Basque province of Navarre, bordering on France.

Most of the prisoners, who escaped through prison sewers in Spain's biggest jailbreak since the 1936 to 39 civil war, are Basque nationalists.

General Campano told newsmen a commando of the Basque guerilla group ETA tried to cross form France to help the fugitives, but was repulsed by a civil guard patrol. Police captured two pistols, a submachine gun and 250,000 pesetas (???1 900 sterling) from the fugitives, who apparently lost their way in thick fog in the wooded frontier area.

According to Reuters, the jailbreak came at a time when the deterioration of law and order in Spain is threatening prospects for political reforms.

Police have rounded up 90 alleged ETA members and sympathisers in the northern Basque country in the past week, following a wave of kidnappings and assassinations by the organisation. The ETA seeks a socialist Basque state.
