    FORTY-TWO COMPETITORS FROM 11 COUNTRIES (ALGERIA, WEST GERMANY, BELGIUM, SPAIN, FRANCE, BRITAIN, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, HOLLAND, SWITZERLAND AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA ) TOOK PART IN THE 23.5-KM (14.5-MILE) RACE. IT WAS RUN OVER A TOUGH COURSE NEAR THE FLEMISH VILLAGE OF OVERBOELARE.

    THE RACE INVOLVED BOTH RIDING AND CARRYING THE BICYCLE OVER GROUND TOO SODDEN OR HILLY FOR SAFE RIDING. LONGO WAS A HOT FAVOURITE AND WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE LEAD.

    HE INCREASED HIS LEAD LAP BY LAP. AFTER THREE LAPS, HER WAS 32 SECONDS IN FRONT. BY THE END OF THE FOURTH LAP, HE HAD BOOSTED HIS LEAD TO 65 SECONDS, AND PUT ANOTHER 30 SECONDS ON HIS RIVALS BY THE END OF THE FOLLOWING LAP. HE CRUISED TO THE FINISHING LINE A CLEAR ONE MINUTE 46 SECONDS (106 SECS) AHEAD OF THE STRUGGLING OPPOSITION.

    IT WAS A GREAT CLIMAX TO HIS UNBEATEN RUN ON THE ITALIAN CIRCUIT THIS WINTER, WINNING ALL 18 MAJOR RACES. BELGIUM NARROWLY WON THE TEAM PRIZE FROM FRANCE, WITH ITALY THIRD.
