United States troops in West Germany today moved into a state of preparedness for possible intervention in the Middle East. thousands of troops at a U.S. Army base at Mainz were put on the alert today and were given inoculations and issued with equipment in readiness for an airlift.
The troops at Mainz are part of the U.S. 8th Airborne division which is trained for airlift operations over long distances, complete with heavy equipments, including artillery.
Today, troops were moving equipment and ammunition onto trucks, checking weapons and kit and receiving injections necessary for service in the Middle East zone.
These movements, along with a build-up of U.S. forces in the Mediterranean and Turkey, are part of American preparedness for a rescue operation in Jordan, should American lives in that country became imperilled by the fighting between King Hussein's army and the Palestinian commandos.
