  • Description

ALEXANDROS PANAGOULIS, THE CONVICTED WOULD-BE ASSASSIN OF THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER WHO ESCAPED FROM JAIL ON THURSDAY, WAS RECAPTURED YESTERDAY IN NEW IONA, A SUBURB OF ATHENS. WITHIN HOURS HE WAS PARADED BEFORE A MILLING CROWD OF NEWSMEN IN A WHITEWASHED ROOM AT NEW IONA POLICE STATION.

CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE CAPTURE OF 30-YEAR-OLD PANAGOULIS -- AN ARMY DESERTER WHO IS UNDER SENTENCE OF DEATH FOR TRYING TO OVERTHROW THE GREEK REGIME AND KILL PREMIER GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS -- WERE GIVEN TO NEWSMEN AT A PRESS CONFERENCE AT NEW IONA POLICE STATION BY PUBLIC ORDER MINISTER PANAYOTIS TZEVELEKOS.

PANAGOULIS WAS MARCHED THROUGH A MILLING CROWD OF NEWSMEN. HE WAS HANDCUFFED TO A POLICE OFFICER, AND HIS MOUSTACHE WAS GONE.

AT TIMES ALMOST HAVING TO SHOUT TO MAKE HIMSELF HEARD, MR. TZEVELEKOS SAID THAT PANAGOULIS -- FOR WHOSE RECAPTURE A REWARD OF 7-THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING HAD BEEN OFFERED -- HAD BEEN RE-ARRESTED BY GENDARMERIE IN A HOUSE OCCUPIED BY TWO MEN. HE SAID HE WAS UNARMED AND SURRENDERED WITHOUT A STRUGGLE.
