  • Description

As Vatican City and Rome prepare for Holy Year -- 1975 -- churches throughout the world have begun the first phase of the celebrations which are held every 25 years.

During 1975, up to 25 million pilgrims are expected to converge on Rome to receive a "plenary indulgence"...remission of punishment for past sine. The pilgrimages to Rome have continued every quarter century since 1470. But Pope Paul announced on June 10 that for the first time, spiritual preparations for the year would be held in local churches throughout the world. During this preparatory phase, indulgences will be granted in individual countries in cathedrals and sanctuaries chosen locally. This is a complete departure from past practice with has been the continuation of Holy Year celebrations in individual countries only after they have been completed in Rome.

Holy Year itself begins on Christmas Eve, 1974, probably with the traditional opening of the "Holy Doors" in the four Rome. Basilicas -- St. Peter's, St. John's, St. Mary Major's and St. Paul's. Pilgrims will visit the four Basilicas as they are traditionally required to do. But they will also be encouraged to go to the ancient catacombs (a network of caves) on the edge of Rome where Christians were buried during the Roman Empire.
