  • Description

POLITICAL DIFFERENCES PUSHED ASIDE, GERMAN ICE-SKATERS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) GATHERED IN EAST BERLIN FOR QUALIFYING TRIALS TO CHOOSE AN ALL-GERMAN TEAM FOR THE 1964 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES IN AUSTRIA. BOTH THE FEDERAL GERMAN REPUBLIC AND THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC WERE REPRESENTED BY THEIR STRONGEST TEAMS.

THIS WAS THE OUTCOME OF LONG NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THEIR RESPECTIVE OLYMPIC COMMITTEES, RESULTING IN A DECISION TO ENTER A UNITED TEAM. THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, MR. BRUNDAGE, SAID RECENTLY THAT THE COMMITTEE OF EAST AND WEST GERMANY HAD EQUAL STATUS. AND AS FOR THE SPORTSMEN THEMSELVES, HE SAID, "THEY GET ON VERY WELL."
EARLIER THIS MONTH, IN A SIMILAR QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT, A WEST GERMAN ICE-HOCKEY TEAM BEAT THEIR EAST GERMAN OPPONENTS TO WIN A CHANCE OF FURTHER HONOURS IN AUSTRIA NEXT YEAR.
