  • Description

Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi laid two wreaths during the second day of his official visit to the Soviet Union Tuesday (7 December).

SYNOPSIS: The Vladimir Lenin Mausoleum was the scene of the first wreath laying ceremony.

Soviet soldiers helped President Gaddafi pay tribute to the founder of the world's first socialist state. The ceremony was market by a minute silence.

Talks with Kremlin chiefs Leonid Brezhnev, Alexei Kosygin and Nikolai Podgorny have so far dominated the Libyan leader's visit. Ways of achieving a Middle East peace settlement have been discussed, with the Kremlin favouring a solution through a Geneva peace conference and President Gaddafi arguing "that not too much significance should be attached to conferences." The only break in these discussions came when President Gaddafi and Soviet soldiers laid the wreaths. The second ceremony took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin wall.

President Gaddafi said he was pleased to honour Soviet soldiers who "scarified their lives in the struggle against fascism in the name of lasting world peace."
