  • Description

A group of about 200 volunteers are hard at work in an attempt to save Kilmainham Jail, in Dublin, which once held captured men of the Irish Republican Army. Every evening about 30 workers take up their tools in the work of restoring the old prison. On Saturday evenings as many as 70 turn out for duty.

A tremendous effort is being made to complete the roof of the main wing so that the work can carry on through winter. Carpenters, masons, electricians, veterans of the IRA and their sons and daughters have taken up the task of restoring the jail without pay. Materials and tools have been supplied by local firms free of charge. The Eire Government has provided GBP1,000 worth of timber for the projects.

When the work is finished the jail will be presented to the nation as a monument to the 1798 to 1923 patriots.
