  • Description

A Japanese designed and built Formula One racing car is currently being tested at the Silverstone racing circuit in England. The car, known as the Maki, is being backed by a group of young Japanese businessmen, and marks the start of a new venture by the Japanese. It is the first time they've made a full-scale attempt to break into the Formula One Grand Prix circuit. The Maki is being test driven at Silverstone by New Zealand driver Howden Genley.

The Maki will surprise followers of Formula One racing. It looks different in many respects. The front is wider, and the car has much more bodywork than the usual sparsely bodied Formula One design. The near engine, usually open to the air for light weight and cooling, is covered with a body panel.

The Japanese businessmen behind the venture say no car company is involved. However, they have been reluctant to say where the money needed to build and race such an expensive car is coming from. The Maki was to have raced in the Spanish and Belgian Grand Prix, but the mechanics after consideration did not think it was ready for the race track. It is hoped to get the car in competitive condition before the end of this Grand Prix season.
