Background: VISNEWS June 7 filmed outside Alexandra Palace, London, as a scrap rubber dump at Hale Wharf, Tottenham blazed eight miles away. The smoke pall, which hung over North London, could be seen in the West End, in the City and in South London. As it rose in the air it blotted out the sun.
Eighty firemen fought the blaze on the two-acre rubber dump. Flames roared over the site devouring thousands of tons of rubber. A single-storey building used for reclaiming the waste rubber was destroyed.
Thousands of Sunday trippers on their way to the seaside crowded the banks of the River Lea - opposite the dump. Traffic jams formed at Tottenham as the holiday-makers left their cars to watch the blaze. Meanwhile under the heavy pall of black smoke, an afternoon cricket match continued - undisturbed by the incident.
Only casualties: Five black kittens trapped in a hut near the dump.
