  • Description

Members of the two left-wing parties in Cyprus, and a group of Palestinians, have protested peacefully against an Israeli trade exhibition being held in Nicosia.

SYNOPSIS: The Israeli government chose the Hilton Hotel in the centre of Nicosia as the venue for the exhibition, which was to promote Israeli goods and service. The Cypriot police were aware of anti-Israeli or anti-Zionist feelings among some left wingers on the island, and laid careful plans to avoid any trouble. In the event, the demonstrators were peaceful, picketing outside the hotel with banners making their feelings known. Zionism, the banners said, was the enemy of Cyprus, was racism, was the slaughterer of Palestinians. The demonstrators were made up of Palestinians living in Cyprus, and members of the Communist Party, AKEL, and the Socialist Party, EDEK.
