    SOUTH VIETNAM'S ARMED FORCES CHIEFS ANNOUNCED AUGUST 17 THAT MORE THAN 7 COMMUNIST VIETCONG REBELS WERE TRAPPED AND KILLED IN THE DESOLATE PLAINE DES JONCS AREA, AND ANOTHER 20 REBELS WERE CAPTURED. AMONG THE CAPTURED EQUIPMENT WERE LAND MINES, TWO OF WHICH WERE CZECH-MADE BOX-TYPE 100-POUNDERS, RIFLES, GRENADES, BULLETS AND GUN POWDER AND A PRINTING PRESS.

    FIRST TO CONGRATULATE THE GOVERNMENT TROOPS, WHICH WERE LED BY COLONEL HUYNH VAN CAO, WAS THE MINISTER OF CIVIC-ACTION, NGO TRONG HIEU, WHEN HE VISITED THE MOC HOA DISTRICT OF KIEN TUONG PROVINCE, 200 MILES FROM SAIGON. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY GENERAL LEE VAN NGHIEM, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE THIRD DIVISION.

    COLONEL CAO REPORTED ON THE OPERATION WHICH BEGAN AUGUST 13 AND SPREAD OVER 800 SQUARE MILES. HE SAID THERE WAS ONLY ONE GOVERNMENT CASUALTY, A SOLDIER WHO DROWNED IN A RIVER, COLONEL CAO SAID HIS INTENTION WAS TO DRIVE THE VIETCONG OUT OF THE HEAVILY POPULATED VILLAGES AND CHASE THEM ONTO THE PLAIN, WHERE HE COULD ENGAGE THEM IN BATTLE. HE ADDED THAT ABOUT 100 VIETCONG SOLDIERS WERE STILL HIDING IN THE SWAMPY AREAS OF THE PLAINE DES JONCS AND THE OPERATIONS WOULD CONTINUE AGAINST THEM.
