  • Description

THOUSANDS OF PARISIANS CRAMMED INTO PRIVATE CARS AND MILITARY TRUCKS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS A 24-HOUR STRIKE PARALYSED THE CITY'S SUBURBAN RAIL NETWORK. WITH MILITARY PRECISION ABOUT 300 ARMY TRUCKS BEGAN A FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE BETWEEN MAIN SUBURBAN CENTRES AND UNDERGROUND TERMINALS. MANY COMMUTERS WERE FORCED TO WALK TO WORK.

LONG-DISTANCE TRAIN SERVICES RAN AS USUAL AND A FEW INTERNATIONAL TRAINS REACHED DESTINATIONS. BUT THE STRIKE WAS VIRTUALLY 100 PER CENT EFFECTIVE IN THE PARIS REGION AND THE NORTH, WEST AND SOUTHERN AREAS. ELSEWHERE, SOME TRAINS WENT THROUGH MANNED BY NON-STRIKERS.

RAILWAY UNIONS, WHO CALLED THE STOPPAGE, CLAIM THAT PROMISES MADE TO THEM BY THE GOVERNMENT LAST SPRING HAVE NOT BEEN KEPT AND THAT WAGES HAVE LESS PURCHASING POWER.

(PRESIDENT DE GAULLE DISCUSSED THE STRIKE - AND THREATENED ACTION BY CIVIL SERVANTS AND OTHER STATE WORKERS - AT A CABINET MEETING TODAY. LATER, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THE GOVERNMENT WOULD GRANT A SMALL PAY INCREASE TO ALL STATE EMPLOYEES AND WORKERS IN NATIONALISED INDUSTRIES.)
