    Background: The Egyptian Foreign Minister, October Hassan Mohammed El-Zayyat, held talks in Vienna on Friday (13 July) on an Austrian plan to ease tensions in the Middle East.

    Doctor El-Zayyat is on his way to New York for the resumption of a United Nations Security Council debate on the Middle East which was interrupted last month.

    The Minister flew to Vienna after visiting Yugoslavia, where he told officials that Egypt wanted peace, but if necessary wold fight for peace.

    In Vienna, Doctor El-Zayyat conferred with the Austrian Chancellor, Doctor Bruno Kreisky, and Austria's Foreign Minister, doctor Rudolf Kirschlaeger.

    Austria, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has been canvassing international, views on a plan which calls for a step-by-step approach, leading ultimately to Egyptian-Israeli contacts.

    No details of the Austrian plan have been disclosed.

    Doctor El-Zayyat leaves Vienna on Sunday (15 July).

    Doctor El-Zayyat flew to Vienna after visiting Yugoslavia, where he reiterated that Egypt would fight, if necessary, for peace in the Middle East.

    The Egyptian Foreign Minister later had discussions with the Austrian Chancellor, Doctor Bruno Kreisky. The actual details of the Austrian peace plan have not been disclosed. Doctor El-Zayyat is on his way to New York for the resumption of the Security Council debate on the Middle East which was interrupted in June.
