In the occupied West Bank towns of Ramallah and Nablus Israeli troops used tear gas on Monday (13 December) to break up anti-Israel demonstrations by Arab youth.

SYNOPSIS: High school pupils were on the rampage for the second time in a week in the troubled town of Ramallah. They shouted pro- Palestinian and anti-Israeli slogans and burned tyres -- a popular form of protest in West Bank demonstrations. The youths tried to block the main Jerusalem to Nablus highway and attempted to force shopkeepers to close.

When Israeli border police movement in to break up the demonstration, Arab youths threw stones at them.

There has been week-long unrest in the region which Israeli authorities have linked with a current meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) in Damascus and discontent over the introduction of a new value added tax.

When the police arrived they brought with them tear gas. Later, security forces arrested dozens of Arab youths on charges of incitement and causing disturbances. In the town of Nablus this prompted the Israelis to impose a curfew.

The Arabs say the demonstrations are also over Israeli land confiscations, Jewish settlement in the area and frustration after nine years of occupation.

Although the demonstrations are frequent most of them are relatively harmless. The youths attack with rocks and the Israelis with tear gas. There have not been the injuries there was inn violent clashes earlier this year. A feature of the renewed flare-up has been the open display of Palestinian flags in processions from schools. This comes at a time when the Israeli government is insisting to the United States that only Jordan can represent the Palestinians at a reconvened Geneva conference on the Middle East.
