  • Description

AUSTRALIAN DRIVER JACK BRABHAM, DRIVING IMPECCABLY IN THE BRAND-NEW BRABHAM-FORD DESIGNED BY HIMSELF AND RON TAURANAC, WON THE FIRST 1970 GRAND PRIX IN KYALAMI, SOUTH AFRICA, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). SURPRISE FINISHER WAS FORMER WORLD CHAMPION GRAHAM HILL DRIVING FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE BREAKING BOTH LEGS AND SUFFERING OTHER INJURIES IN THE UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX LAST OCTOBER - HE FINISHED SIXTH IN ROB WALKER'S LOTUS 49C.

JACK BRABHAM, WHO WILL BE 44 NEXT MONTH, WON THE 80-LAP, 204-MILE (328-KILO-METRE) RACE IN ONE HOUR, 49 MINUTES, 34.6 SECONDS - AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 111.70 MILES PER HOUR (179.33 KILOMETRES PER HOUR).

SECOND WAS NEW ZEALANDER DENNY HULME IN A MCLAREN-FORD - ONLY EIGHT SECONDS BEHIND BRABHAM.

THIRD PLACE WENT TO REIGNING WORLD CHAMPION JACKIE STEWART IN THE TYRRELL RACING ORGANISATION'S MARCH-FORD WHICH WAS MAKING ITS FIRST RACING APPEARANCE. HE CAME IN 17 SECONDS BEHIND THE WINNER.

IT WAS STEWART WHO TOOK THE LEAD WHEN THE 23 CARS ROARED AWAY FROM THE START CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY BELGIUM'S JACKY ICKX DRIVING AN ITALIAN FERRARI.

IN THE FOURTH LAP THE BACK WHEEL OF RINDT'S LOTUS WENT OVER BRABHAM'S FRONT WHEEL AS THE CARS BUNCHED AT A BEND - AND BRABHAM SAID LATER "I SPENT THE NEXT FOUR LAPS LOOKING AT THE WHEEL TO SEE IF IT WOULD COME OFF. THEN I THOUGHT 'TO HELL WITH IT, LET'S HAVE A GO'". AND HE DID. STEWART'S TEN-SECOND GAP BY THE TENTH LAP WAS LOST AS BRABHAM CLOSED IN, FOLLOWING THE CHAMPION UNTIL HE MANAGED TO OVERTAKE HIM ON THE 19TH LAP, GOING ON TO SET A NEW LAP RECORD IN THE 20TH AT ONE MINUTE 21.5 SECONDS. FROM THEN ON IT WAS BRABHAM'S RACE.

MEANWHILE, DENNY HULME HAD ALSO BEEN CLOSING IN AND, AND THE 38TH LAP, OVERTOOK STEWART TO HOLD SECOND PLACE TO THE END.

GRAHAM HILL, WHO HAD ONLY FINALLY DECIDED TO RACE TWO DAYS EARLIER-TRAILED IN THE BUNCH EARLY IN THE RACE. BUT, TRUE TO HIS WILY REPUTATION ON THE GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT, TOOK HIS TIME AND DROVE STEADILY TO BRING HIMSELF IN SIXTH IN A FINISHING FIELD OF 13 OUT OF THE 23 STARTERS. IT WAS REPORTED THAT, DUE TO PAIN IN ONE OF HIS LEGS, HE AT ONE TIME HAD TO OPERATE ALL THREE PEDALS WITH ONE FOOT - AND THIS FROM A MAN WHO HAD BEEN TOLD HE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE AT ALL FOR A YEAR.

IN FOURTH PLACE WAS TOP FRENCH DRIVER JEAN-PIERRE BELTOISE IN THE LATEST MATRA.

AMONG THOSE WHO RETIRED DURING ONE OF THE MOST GRUELLING SOUTH AFRICAN GRAND PRIX IN YEARS WERE BELGIUM'S ICKX, NEW ZEALAND'S MCLAREN AND BRITAIN'S SURTEES.
