    MYSTERIOUS ATOMIC PARTICLES KNOWN AS NEUTRINOS AND PREVIOUSLY DETECTED ONLY IN A 'MAN-MADE' STATE, HAVE BEEN DETECTED IN A NATURAL CONDITION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE WORLD'S DEEPEST MINE AT BOKSBURG, IN THE TRANSVAAL REGION OF SOUTH AFRICA.

    THE NATURAL NEUTRINOS WERE FIRST DISCOVERED IN MARCH THIS YEAR, AND SINCE THEN SEVEN HAVE BEEN DETECTED.

    NEUTRINOS ARE DESCRIBED BY PHYSICISTS AS UNIQUE ATOMIC PARTICLES LIKE PROTONS, NEUTRONS AND ELECTRONS, BUT HAVING NEITHER ELECTRIC CHARGE NOR MASS.THE KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR EXISTENCE IS SAID TO HELP PHYSICISTS IN UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF MATTER AND THE FORCES PREVAILING IN NATURE.

    THE EXPERIMENT AT THE BOKSBURG MINE HAS BEEN CONDUCTED JOINTLY BY THE UNIVERSITY OF WITWATERSRAND IN SOUTH AFRICA AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CLEVELAND IN THE UNITED STATES.

    THE DETECTION EQUIPMENT WAS PLACED IN WHAT IS THE WORLD'S DEEPEST LABORATORY - 10,492 FEET (3108 KM) UNDERGROUND.

    AT THAT DEPTH THE HEAT IS TREMENDOUS AND REFRIGERATED AIR HAD TO BE PUMPED UNDERGROUND.

    THE UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION CONTRIBUTED HALF A MILLION DOLLARS TOWARDS THE COSTS OF THE EXPERIMENT, AND THE WORK WAS LED BY DOCTOR W.R.KROPP, AN AMERICAN SCIENTIST.

    (A CASE FOR THE THEORETICAL EXISTENCE OF NEUTRINO ENERGY PARTICLES WAS PUT FORWARD BY A PHYSICIST AS EARLY AS 1930.THE RECENT EXPERIMENTS HAVE NOW HELPED PROVE THIS THEORY.
