SYNOPSIS: In Algiers and Wednesday, representatives of bath the French oil consortium ELF-ERAP and the Algerian State-owned SONATRACH, met to sign an agreement which was to bring an and to the long-standing oil war between the two countries, which culminated last February when the Algerian Government took fifty-one per cent control of French oil interests following a series of nationalisation measures.

The two-hundred-and-forty-eight-page document was signed by Michel Tenaille for ELF-ERAP, and by the Chairman of SONATRACH, Sid Ahmed Ghezali, for the state-owned organisation. Although no details of the agreement were immediately announced, it is known that the pact takes the form of separate settlements and agreements on future working of each of ELF-ERAP's five subsidiaries in Algeria. Individually, the five have also negotiated separate settlements--the first signed in June, two others in recent weeks, and the last two expected in the very near future.
