  • Description

The Greek Catholic Church's Holy Synod under Patriarch Maximos the fifth, Hakim of Antioch, near the Lebanese resort of Aley, ended on Saturday (24 August) amid reports from Israel that the Greek Catholic Archbishop Hilarion Capucci had admitted to his Israeli interrogators that he had acted as a courier for the Palestinian Guerrilla organisation Al-Fatah.

The case of the Syrian born Archbishop Capucci has dominated discussions at the Synod. The meeting decided to send two special envoys from the church, Monsignor Boulos Ashkar and Archimandrite Bartholmeus Samman, to Jerusalem to investigate the allegations against the Community's prelate in the Israeli occupied Arab sector of the city.

There have been reports quoting Patriarch Maximos as saying that the 52-year-old Archbishop suffers from heart trouble and continued detention would be a serious danger to his life. The Archbishop was remanded for 15 days a week ago on suspicion of smuggling arms. He has not yet been charged.
