  • Description

A powerful bomb blast set fire to the Swedish Tourist Office on the Champs Elysee in Paris on Wednesday night (21 May). The building also houses Swedish Radio and a Volvo car company showroom.

Firemen soon had the blaze under control, and nobody was hurt. The blast appeared to have occurred on the building's upper floors.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the bombings, but it appeared to have been linked to the start of the trial of the alleged leaders of the anarchist Baader-Meinhof gang in Stuttgart, West Germany the same day. Another blast had also shattered the front door of the West German Consulate in Nice earlier in the day.

Last month six terrorists claiming to be members of the Baader-Meinhof gang attacked and blew up the West German Embassy in Stockholm.

However, there was a hint that the outlawed Irish Republican Army (IRA) could also have been responsible. The bombed building was recently bought by an unnamed English company that had also recently been the target of another IRA attack.
