  • Description

POPE PAUL YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) RECEIVED A PROGRESS REPORT ON THE WORK OF HIS COMMISSION STUDYING POSSIBLE CHANGES IN ROMAN CATHOLIC TEACHING ON BIRTH CONTROL. HE HELD PRIVATE TALKS WITH THREE LEADING MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION, WHOSE WEEK-LONG DISCUSSIONS ARE DUE TO END TODAY OR TOMORROW.

THE COMMISSION, COMPRISING 15 CARDINALS AND BISHOPS, HAS BEFORE IT A 500-PAGE REPORT FROM EXPERTS WHO HAVE BEEN STUDYING THE CONTROVERSIAL PROBLEM FOR NEARLY THREE YEARS.

IT HAS TO SUBMIT ITS RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE PONTIFF, WHO WILL THEN DECIDE WHETHER TO ACCEPT OR MODIFY THEM.

ATTENDING THE COMMISSION'S MEETING ARE THIRTY OF THE EXPERTS, INCLUDING THREE MARRIED COUPLES.

THE PRESENT TEACHING OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH BANS ALL ARTIFICIAL MEANS OF BIRTH CONTROL.
