President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania has called 1977 the year of resolute resistance against aggression from Algeria. The two countries are in dispute over the future of the Western Sahara, which was split between Mauritania and Morocco when the Spanish left, Algeria has been supporting guerrillas of the Polisario Front, who are fighting for the independence of the territory.

SYNOPSIS: President Ould Daddah was addressing his National Assembly in a speech marking the 17th anniversary of the country's independence (28 November). He said the people of Mauritania had shown that just as they had resisted colonialist forces in years past, they were resisting Algerian advances with the same motivation and force.

The President paid tribute to all those who had died in the fighting, civilians and members of the armed forces. He said they had sacrificed themselves for their country. But he said that faced with an escalation of the fighting, everyone had to redouble their efforts.
