Background: INTRODUCTION: France's Foreign Minister, M. Claude Cheysson, arrived in India on Sunday (23 August) for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries. M. Cheysson was accompanied by a strong delegation from his military, an indication of how important they regard the visit.
SYNOPSIS: In India, the name Mahatma Gandhi is a symbol of the past fight for independence from the British. And it was his leadership that laid the foundation for present-day India under Mrs Indira Gandhi, the current Prime Minister. The first task for M. Cheysson was to pay his country's respects to the memory of the great man who headed the nationalist movement, at his memorial in the capital, Delhi.
Afterwards he went to the Indian Foreign Ministry. He was greeted by his opposite number, Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao. They talked in private for a short time after posing for the cameramen. Then they joined their respective delegations for the official talks.
M. Cheysson and his hosts wasted no time in getting down to business. The talks went ahead despite the Hindu celebrations of the birthday of Lord Krishna. According to Reuters reports, there were two main items on their agenda - Afghanistan and the recent Mexico talks on relations between the Third World and richer nations.
