President Nixon has declared Mississippi a major disaster area. Tornadoes cut a swathe of destruction?
President Nixon has declared Mississippi a major disaster area. Tornadoes cut a swathe of destruction through the western part of the state and part of neighbouring Louisiana, killing at least 84 people. Hundreds more have been injured and damage is expected to amount to millions of dollars. The President's declaration means that Federal funds will be released for use in the State for relief.
The tornadoes struck on Sunday night and Monday morning. Others hit Texas and Tennessee causing damage and injuries, but no deaths.
Meanwhile, blizzards swept across Kansas and other middle western states bringing up to a foot of snow (36 cms) causing about 20 deaths. Snow clogged the roads, paralysing transport, and blew into drifts up to 20 feet deep. The weight of snow collapsed a number of rooves.
