  • Description

Rocks and broken glass littered the streets of the negro west side of New Jersey's Asbury Park today (8 July) after three days of running gunbattles between gangs of negro youths and police.

The streets of the negro quarter, where a curfew is in force, were deserted today for the first time since Sunday (July 5) when groups of negroes went on a rampage, culminating in an attempt to storm Asbury's business centre late yesterday (July 7).

Hundreds of people were injured in the riots, the most serious in New Jersey this summer, and city officials estimated damage at more than two million dollars (about 850,000 Sterling). More than 40 people received bullet wounds during the rioting.
