  • Description

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WALKED ABOUT IN HIS HOSPITAL ROOM TODAY (SATURDAY) - BARELY 24 HOURS AFTER HIS OPERATION FOR THE REMOVAL OF A PROSTATE GLAND. IN TODAY'S COMMUNIQUE THE PRESIDENT'S CONDITION WAS DESCRIBED AS 'VERY SATISFACTORY'. SIGNED BY 3 DOCTORS, IT WENT ON TO SAY THAT HE HAD SPENT A GOOD NIGHT.

THE PRESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO SPEND AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN HOSPITAL BEFORE UNDERGOING A PERIOD OF CONVALESCENCE, POSSIBLY AT HIS COUNTRY HOME. HE IS THOUGHT TO HAVE UNDERGONE THE NON-URGENT OPERATION NOW, SO THAT HE COULD FACE THE FUTURE UNHAMPERED BY ANY UNCERTAINTY ABOUT HIS HEALTH. HE IS DUE TO MAKE ANOTHER VISIT TO LATIN AMERICA LATER THIS YEAR, AND THERE IS ALSO THE DECISION ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT TO STAND FOR RE-ELECTION FOR A SECOND SEVEN YEAR PRESIDENTIAL TERM IN THE AUTUMN OF 1956.
