Background: 63 people died in an aircrash near Tell City, Indiana, USA, March 17. The plane, a Northwest Airlines Lockheed Electra, exploded in mid-air and the fuselage hurtled earthwards blasting a 25 feet deep 50 feet wide crater in a farm field.

There were on survivors. Wreckage was scattered over five miles from the burnt our fuselage and clothing hung in shreds from trees in the heavily wooded area.

Snow thirteen inches deep, hampered rescue operations and bull-dozers will be used to recover bodies.

The plane was on a flight from Minneapolis to Miami via Chicago. Until Chicago there only 18 passengers aboard.

F.B.I. agents and Civil Aeronautics Board investigators rushed to Tell City to probe this mystery crash. Eye-witnesses reported hearing two explosions before the aircraft plunged in pieces to the ground. A telephone call was also made to Chicago Midway airport saying a bomb had been placed aboard one of the aircraft. This information was received two hours after the Electra crash and investigators are not sure whether it appertained to this crashed plane, but for the moment, with few clues, they are concentrating on this angle.
