  • Description

President Nixon greeted Rumanian President Nicolae Ceausescu in Washington, United States, on Tuesday (December 3rd) at the start of a visit to improve economic relations between the two countries. Later a trade agreement was signed with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce - the first such pact signed by the Chamber with a Socialist country.

Rumania is a member of the Warsaw pact, but traditionally maintains a very independent line in international relations. President Nixon visited Bucharest in 1969. Both men said the visit had been a significant step towards the President's historic trips to the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China.

President Ceausescu expressed satisfaction at the progress made, but said he hoped Rumania would be given the same favourable tariff treatment as other U.S. trading partners.

President Nixon traced the growing goodwill of the two countries and pointed out that different political ideologies need be no bar to friendship.
