  • Description

The death toll in the wake of last week's cyclone in Sri Lanka is now more than one thousand. the storm left a path of death and destruction as it swept through Colombo and the Batticoloa Coast, and the military has mounted a massive operation to help survivors.

Relief teams rushed into the areas hardest hit to help victims. Medicine, food, powered milk and blankets, collected by the Red Cross, were airlifted to stricken areas. Several countries have already responded to the appeals for help. The government says it will distribute free food and rebuild houses over the next three months.

More than half a million buildings were destroyed by the cyclone, which brought one hundred mile an hour winds smashing into the east coast of the island. Almost a million people are believed to be homeless. Although the death toll has reportedly topped one thousand, it is still impossible to come up with an exact figure. No-one is certain how many people drowned, or were buried in the under???. More bodies are still buried under the rubble of buildings which have not been cleared away.
