  • Description

As the U.S. Senate ratified June 22 the U.S.-Japanese Security Treaty by a big majority, tens of thousands of Japanese students and unionists massed in front of the diet in Tokyo in the 18th protest demonstration against treaty and the Kishi government.

The demonstrators gathered at Tokyo's Hibiya Park and marched to the Diet, carrying placards denouncing the treaty and Prime Minister Kishi. "We will never recognize the validity of the new treaty," "the cabinet of murderer Kishi must go" were typical slogans.

A notable addition to this demonstration was a group of buddhist monks beating fan-drums and demanding Kishi's resignation.

The demonstrators were answering a call by the "people's council against the security treaty revision" though the treaty was automatically ratified in Tokyo June 19 they continued to denounce it and demand Kishi's resignation.

Within hours of this demonstration, Mr. Kishi announced his intention to resign although he did not say when. Kishi however said the cabinet was not resigning and he urged his liberal democratic party to unite and fight against the "strategy of international communism". Opposition socialist party immediately demanded that they be given the task of forming a caretaker cabinet. The democratic socialists also favoured a caretaker cabinet but one that was headed by one of their party.
