  • Description

IN INDIA, SOME 30,000 PEOPLE ARE STILL MAROONED BY FLOODWATERS IN THE RURAL DISTRICT OF ALIPUR, NORTH OF NEW DELHI.

HUNDREDS OF VILLAGERS HAVE ALREADY BEEN EVACUATED BY BOAT AND ARE CAMPING IN TENTS ON THE CAPITAL'S OUTSKIRTS WHILE THEIR CATTLE GRAZE ALONG ITS MAIN AVENUES.

SOME 70 SQUARE MILES OF COUNTRY ARE NOW UP TO TEN FEET (THREE METRES) DEEP BENEATH THE WATERS POURING INTO THE DELHI AREA FROM THE PUNJAB AND RAJASTHAN STATE AFTER HEAVY MONSOONAL RAINS.

AS WELL AS THE HAZARDS OF DROWNING, THOSE MAROONED AT ALIPUR ALSO FACE THE DANGER OF SNAKEBITE AS COBRAS AND OTHER POISONOUS SNAKES FLEEING FROM THE FLOODS REACH THE SMALL ISLANDS OF HIGHER GROUND.

ROAD TRAFFIC INTO NEW DELHI IS CUT OFF FROM NORTH, WEST AND EAST.

THE FLOODING IS COMING FROM A 380-FOOT (115 METRES) GAP IN THE EMBANKMENT OF THE SWOLLEN JUMNA RIVER, SOME 30 MILES (40 KILOMETRES) FROM NEW DELHI, AND A BURST DAM NEAR ALWAY, 125 MILES (200 KMS) AWAY.

ABOUT FIVE-THOUSAND INDIAN TROOPS ARE WORKING FEVERISHLY TO PLUG THE EMBANKMENT, BUT THIS IS EXPECTED TO TAKE AT LEAST TWO WEEKS.
