  • Description

In Manila, a military tribunal on Wednesday ordered that former Senator Benigno Aquino must be allowed to consult in confidence with his panel of civilian legal advisors before deciding if he will defend himself.

Mr. Aquino, a potential presidential candidate before martial law was imposed by President Marcos in 1972, is facing three criminal charges of subversion, illegal possession of firearms and murder.

The tribunal - one of the military commission Mr. Marcos has promised to chase out soon - made its order on the plea of Aquino.

He had been summond to appear behind closed doors at the conclusion of the prosecution case to state if he intended to present evidence on his own behalf.

Though hearings were behind closed doors and even his family members were excluded, newsmen including TV cameras were allowed in to cover the trial.

Aquino complained at hearing that he could not make a decision because he had never been allowed to meet more than two of his panel of 12 advisers and never in a situation of confidentiality to consult properly with his legal advisers.

After adjourning for 30 minutes, the tribunal announced support of his request, through its law member Colonel Salvador Sardalla.
