Background: INTRODUCTION: Soccer .. and a last minute penalty in extra time by Ray Steward earned West Ham a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the English League Cup final on Saturday (14 March). It was a dramatic finish to a game which had failed to live up to expectations and only flared to life in the last five minutes of extra time.

SYNOPSIS: A crowd of 100,000 at Wembley Stadium saw a dull 90 minutes play between a first division club and the second division leaders. Liverpool, in red, were denied an early lead by an off-side decision from the linesman. Defender Colin Irwin was ahead of Sammy Lee's attack, and his goal was disallowed. A number of promising attacks followed from both sides, but those not foiled by goalkeeper Ray Clemence for Liverpool and Phil Parkes for West Ham, simply lacked the determination and accuracy to score the points.

Finally, Liverpool's Alan Kennedy broke the deadlock after 116 minutes with a thunderous right-footer. The cup appeared won by the first division side, and Liverpool's fans were ecstatic.

West Ham had a chance to equalise with a free kick. Clemence only saved it by palming the ball over the crossbar.

The resulting corner proved fateful -- Martin headed and Terry McDermott needlessly handled the ball, a clear penalty.

Steward's kick from the penalty spot was swift and decisive. It gave West Ham the draw and the chance of a re-play. The two sides meet again at Villa park in Birmingham on April 1.
