  • Description

EIGHT STUDENT ORGANISATIONS WERE REPRESENTED IN THURSDAY'S PROTEST MARCH IN DJAKARTA WHICH AIMED AT AROUSING OPPOSITION TO THE BANNED ANTI-COMMUNIST B.P.S.(BODY FOR THE PROMOTION OF SUKARNOISM), THE H.M.I.(ISLAMIC STUDENTS ASSOCIATION) AND CERTAIN LEADING CABINET MINISTERS.

ABOUT 300 STUDENTS, MOSTLY CHINESE, TOOK PART IN THE PROTEST AT WHICH THE NATIONAL FRONT DEPUTY LEADER, MR.ANSWAR SANUSI, CALLED FOR THE 'CRUSHING' OF THE ISLAMIC STUDENTS ASSOCIATION.HE CLAIMED THE ASSOCIATION SUPPORTED THE B.P.S.AND WAS RECEIVING AID FROM THE UNITED STATES.THE KOTRAR REPRESENTATIVE, MR.ASMARA HADI, SAID THAT HE APPRECIATED THE ACTION OF THE PROTESTORS AND ADDED THAT SEVERAL MINISTERS, INCLUDING THE TRADE MINISTER, MR.ADAM MALIK, AND THE EDUCATION MINISTER, PROFESSOR PRIJONO, AND THE VICE PRESIDENT, DR.CHAERUL SALEM, WERE ASSOCIATED WITH WHAT HE DESCRIBED AS 'ANTI REVOLUTIONARY' GROUPS.

THE NATIONAL FRONT LEADER ALSO CLAIMED THAT THE B.P.S.HAD PLANNED "TO KILL SUKARNOISM AND ALSO SUKARNO HIMSELF"; HE CONDEMNED RECENT UNITED STATES ACTION IN BOMBING NORTH VIETNAM AS AGGRESSION NOT ONLY AGAINST NORTH VIETNAM BUT ALSO AGAINST THE "INDONESIAN PEOPLE".

(THE B.P.S.WAS AN ALLIANCE OF NON-COMMUNIST LEFT-WING POLITICIANS AND MILITARY LEADERS WHO WISHED TO ENSURE THE CONTINUED INFLUENCE OF THE PRESIDENT'S POLICIES IN THE EVENT OF HIM RESIGNING OR LEAVING OFFICE.SINCE PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S BANNING OF THE B.P.S.HE HAS INCREASINGLY SOUGHT COMMUNIST SUPPORT AND ON FEBRUARY 25 CLOSED DOWN ALL COUNTRY'S NON-COMMUNIST NEWSPAPERS.
