  • Description

A Chilean driver, shot dead in a clash with police during a demonstration by striking lorry owners, was buried near the smell town of Leyda, 48 miles (75 kms) from Santiago on Thursday (September 6).

The coffin of Mario Mantucci was loaded onto one of the trucks at a camp of lorry owners, who have been on strike for more than six weeks against the nationalisation policies of President Allende's socialist Popular Unity Government. The death was the latest in s series of incidents which have taken the lives of at least 10 people since the bitter road haulage strike began.

News of the death led to a 48 hour protect strike until Thursday midnight by Chile's 140,000 small shopkeepers - their third strike against the Government in less than two months.

It was their latest demonstration of solidarity with the road haulage operators who have been on strike since June 27.
