    SENATOR FERDINAND MARCOS, OF THE OPPOSITION NATIONALISTA PARTY, TODAY (THURSDAY) CONTINUED TO LEAD OVER PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL, IN THE SIXTH PHILIPPINES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. HE IS LEADING BY SOME 388,386 VOTES WITH UNOFFICIAL TABULATIONS REACHING THE HALFWAY MARK OF AN ESTIMATED EIGHT MILLION VOTES CAST IN LAST TUESDAY'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

    THE THIRD PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, SENATOR RAUL MANGLAPUS, IS RUNNING A POOR THIRD. MR. MACAPAGAL HEADS THE LIBERAL PARTY, MR. MARCOS, WHO IS 48, IS A WARTIME HERO AND A LAWYER.

    MEANWHILE, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ELECTION COMMISSION, HAS ISSUED A WARNING TO MUNICIPAL TREASURERS TO SUBMIT THE RESULTS IMMEDIATELY TO COMMISSION HEADQUARTERS OR FACE POSSIBLE SUSPENSION.

    IN THE ELECTION, 46 PERSONS WERE OFFICIALLY REPORTED DEAD AS A RESULT OF 'POLITICAL KILLINGS'. (IN THE 1961 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, 85 DEATHS WERE REPORTED. IN THE 1963 MID-TERM ELECTIONS THE DEATH TOLL WAS 89.)
    SENATOR MARCOS VOTED AT HIS HOMETOWN OF BATAG IN ILOCOS SUR PROVINCE SOME 200 MILES NORTH OF MANILA. BEFORE THE ELECTIONS GOT UNDERWAY, HIS SUPPORTERS WENT TO THE AIRPORT TO GIVE HIM A ROUSING WELCOME. THEY ACCOMPANIED HIM TO A ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WHERE HE RECEIVED HOLY COMMUNION AND LATER CHATTED WITH THEM AT A POLLING STATION. AMONG THE LARGE CROWD WERE MANY WOMEN WHO KISSED HIM ON THE CHEEK FOR GOOD LUCK PURPOSES.

    PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL, WHO IS SEEKING RE-ELECTION TO ANOTHER FOUR-YEAR TERM, WENT TO LUBAO, PAMPANGA, TO CAST HIS VOTE. HE WALKED OUT OF THE POLLING PRECINCT FLANKED BY LARGE CROWDS OF SUPPORTERS. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE, EVANGELINA.

    SOME EIGHT MILLION OUT OF 10.5 MILLION VOTERS, OUT OF A TOTAL POPULATION OF 30 MILLION, CAST THEIR BALLOTS ON TUESDAY TO ELECT A PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, EIGHT OUT OF 24 SENATORS AND 104 MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

    THE ELECTIONS WERE HELD AMID A CLIMATE OF VIOLENCE FAMILIAR WITH POLITICS IN HIS REPUBLIC ARCHIPELAGO. HOWEVER, CANDIDATES OF THE THREE PARTIES CONCERNED ACCUSED EACH OTHER OF TERRORISM, VOTE-BUYING AND TRICKERY AT THE COUNTRY'S 45,000 POLLING PRECINCTS.
