  • Description

Prince Yoshihito Mikasa, a nephew of the Emperor of Japan, is studying at the National University in Canberra, Australia.

Before tackling a two-year post-graduate course in Australian history the Prince felt he needed a refresher course to improve his fluency in English. His elder brother studied at Oxford but Prince Yoshihito preferred Australia. He's already a graduate in law from a Tokyo University and his history course in Canberra will pay particular attention to Australia's developing relations with JAPAN.

The Prince is coming to grips with English structural patterns at a language laboratory in Canberra's new College of Advanced Education. He travels to and from the College in a Japanese car, Prince Yoshihito's informal approach already has provoked his fellow students in Canberra to give his name the standard Australian abbreviation treatment -- to them he's become simply "Yoshi". In fact, the very presence of a Japanese Prince in Australia's national capital probably pinpoints the changes in Japanese-Australian relations during the past 25 years in a way more telling than massive statistics on minerals and imported goods.

A close friendship has developed between the Prince and his Squash partner, Allan Rix, a Sydney student studying Japanese at the Australian National University. Prince Yoshi is only an average squash player but an accomplished skier. He's spent some time on the ski runs of southern New South Wales.

One aspect of Australian life that interest the Prince is the emphasis on outdoor activity. Fellow students say he's a good mixer. And he's ben trying his hand at an Australian national pastime -- the barbecue. He cooked steaks, sausages and chops for a student group at the Cotter Dam on the outskirts of Canberra -- a recreation he seemed to enjoy.
