  • Description

A 67-YEAR-OLD JAPANESE POLITICAL LEADER HAS BEEN CAMPAIGNING AGAINST THIS WEEK'S VISIT OF THE BEATLES POP GROUP WITH THE SHOUT DAMNED BEATLES, GO HOME!" MR. BIN AKAO, LEADER OF THE TINY JAPAN PATRIOTIC PARTY, IS GIVING DAILY LECTURES IN HIS BID TO SEND THE BEATLES PACKING BACK TO MERSEYSIDE WHERE THEY COME FROM.

WHAT RAISED MR. AKO'S IRE WAS THE DECISION TO HOLD THE BEATLES CONCERTS AT THE BODOKAN SPORTS AUDITORIUM IN TOKYO, A VAST HALL BUILT IN 1954 TO PROMOTE KARATE AND JUDO. MR. AKAO REGARDS IT AS "SACRED". "WE MUST PROTECT OUR TRADITIONS AND CULTURE FROM THE BEATLES", HE SAID. "DAMNED BEATLES, GO HOME!" THEIR PRESENCE WOULD DISGRACE THE HALL, HE ADDED.

BUT HIS CAMPAIGN HAS LEFT JAPANESE TEENAGERS UNIMPRESSED. 200,000 OF THEM APPLIED FOR THE 50,000 CONCERT TICKETS. AND THAT IS JUST A FRACTION OF THE NUMBER OF SUPPORTERS THE BRITISH GROUP HAVE IN JAPAN - ESTIMATED BY POLICE AT 3-MILLION.

THE BEATLES, WHO HAVE JUST COMPLETED A RIOTOUS TOUR OF WEST GERMANY, ARE DUE IN TOKYO TOMORROW NIGHT (TUESDAY) AND WILL STAY FIVE DAYS.
