  • Description

Some of the world's finest sailing vessels set out down the English Channel today (Wednesday) for the 630-mile (1013 km) Tall Ships Race. The fleet of 45 entries made an impressive spectacle during the ceremonial sail-past of the Isle of Wight.

The race, which has its finish in Southern Sweden, this year attracted entries from 11 countries.

Early pacemakers today were the three biggest ships in the race: Eagle, entered by the United States Coast Guard; Dar Pomorza, the Polish Merchant Navy's training ship; and Gorch Foch of the West German Navy.

The British training schooner Sir Winston Churchill -- with an all-girl crew for this race -- was involved in a slight collision with another vessel in sea mist at the start.
