  • Description

BRITAIN'S LABOUR GOVERNMENT FACES A MAJOR TEST TOMORROW (THURSDAY) WHEN VOTERS GO TO THE POLS WITH TWO KEY GOVERNMENT MINISTERS OFFERING THEMSELVES FOR ELECTION. THE FIRST TO BE HELD SINCE LABOUR TOOK OFFICE WITH A SLENDER 4-SEAT MAJORITY IN THE 630-SEAT HOUSE OF COMMONS LAST OCTOBER, MR. FRANK COUSINS IS STANDING FOR NUNEATON, WHILE FOREIGN SECRETARY PATRICK GORDON WALKER IS NOMINATED FOR LEYTON.

THESE TWO BY-ELECTIONS WILL PROVIDE THE FIRST PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE IMPACT OF SOME OF MR. WILSON'S MORE CONTROVERSIAL MEASURES.

IN NUNEATON, IN THE MIDLANDS, THE FORMER UNION LEADER, MR. COUSINS, NOW MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY IS SAID TO HAVE MADE A FAVOURABLE IMPRESSION ON VOTERS IN A SEAT WITH A STRONG LABOUR TRADITION. THE SEAT WAS WON FOR LABOUR LAST OCTOBER BY A COMFORTABLE MARGIN OF NEARLY 12,000 VOTES.

MR. COUSINS' OPPONENTS ARE MR. DAVID MARLAND, CONSERVATIVE, AND MR. JOHN CAMPBELL, LIBERAL. BOTH MEN CONTESTED THE NUNEATON SEAT AT THE GENERAL ELECTION LAST YEAR.
