  • Description

PRINCE CHARLES WAS GIVEN A STANDING OVATION AFTER A SPEECH TONIGHT (TUESDAY) TO MORE THAN 800 GUESTS AT AN AUSTRALIA DAY DINNER IN LONDON. THE PRINCE DELIGHTED THE AUDIENCE WITH LIGHT HEARTED COMMENTS ON AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER CRITICISM OF THE ROYAL TOUR TO AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND STARTING IN MARCH.

PRINCE CHARLES SAID THAT THE MORE VISITS THERE COULD BE TO AUSTRALIA, THE LESS NEED THERE WOULD BE FOR FORMALITY. THEN HE ADDED, TO THE DELIGHT OF THE AUDIENCE, "FORMALITY IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. ANYWAY, WHOEVER HEAD OF ANYONE BEING ABLE TO MAINTAIN STRICT FORMALITY WHEN FACED WITH A CROWD OF AUSTRALIANS?"
AMONG THE GUESTS WERE : LONE BRITISH YACHTSMAN SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER; THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY; THE ACTING AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER MR. R.W. BOSWELL AND VISCOUNT LORD DE L'ISLE.

IN A SERIOUS VEIN, PRINCE CHARLES HAILED AUSTRALIA AS A LAND OF CHALLENGE. HE SAID BRITISH INVESTMENT THERE WAS WELL IN EXCESS OF TOTAL AMERICAN UNDERTAKINGS IN AUSTRALIA.

THE 800 GUESTS OCCUPIED 59 TABLES....THE 59TH SEATED NINE MEMBERS OF THE AUSTRALIAN PRESS.
