  • Description

Twenty eight scientist and technicians sailed from Southampton today for the Antarctic in the research ship Shackleton. Of 1,102 tons, she is under the command of Captain Norman Brown, of Nembley. He is twenty-eight years old and has been skipper already for two years. He is considered to be the youngest master in the Merchant Navy.

The ship is taking the scientists, led by Professor Cragg, to seven of eleven British bases. Among them are men like James Franks, meteorological assistant, Peter Hodkinson, meteorological assistant, Gordon ???allinson, wireless-operator-mechanic, Donald Hawkes, Research Geologist.

Several of the crew are from the Falkland Isles; Stanley Hirtle, for example. Tom Flack, 32 years old is Shackleton's Chief Officer.

The Shackleton has a range of 15,000 miles and a cargo capacity of 35,000 cubic feet, and was originally designed for work in the Baltic. This is her third voyage to the Antarctic. On this voyage her holds are full of stores and equipment, like ice tractors, for the seven out of eleven bases which are due to be relieved this trip.

Just before Shackleton sailed a disconsolate young man made his way down the gangway to the jetty. His name: Tom Evans, of ???. Evans had prayed that he would be allowed to sign on as a galley-hand for two years, but at virtually the last minute he was told it was not possible.

Members of the Falkland Isles Dependencies Survey, some of who have spent two years in the Antarctic, will return in Shackleton to Southampton, where she is expected in May 1958.
