  • Description

THE HYDROFOIL, A LARGE HIGH SPEED WATER CRAFT WHICH HAS BEEN A FAMILIAR SIGHT FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS IN SEVERAL PARTS OF EUROPE, HAS NOW APPEARED IN AMERICA.

AN OCEAN GOING VERSION OF THE MODEL - THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD - BEGAN TRIAL RUNS IN LONG ISLAND SOUND, NEW YORK, ON JUNE 27. DESPITE ITS SIZE, IT HAS ROOM FOR 60 PASSENGERS, THE CRAFT WAS CLOCKED AT NEARLY 70 MILES AN HOUR AS IT SKIMMED ACROSS THE SOUND, RISING HIGH OUT OF THE WATER ON ITS HYDROFOILS-THE "WINGS" ATTACHED BY LONG STRUTS TO THE HULL.

CALLED "DENISON" THE CRAFT WAS LAUNCHED EARLIER THIS MONTH BY THE GRUMANN AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING CORPORATION, THE CLIMAX OF A PROJECT COSTING 5 MILLION DOLLARS. THE HULL IS 104 FEET LONG AND ALL ALUMINIUM.

AT SLOW SPEED "DENISON" SITS IN THE WATER LIKE A CONVENTIONAL CRAFT. AS SHE ACCELERATES THE HULL LIFTS UNTIL, AT ABOUT 26 KNOTS, IT STANDS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE WATER ON THE FOILS WHICH UNFOLD HYDRAULICALLY. THE ENGINE, LOCATED ON THE MAIN DECK, IS CAPABLE OF DEVELOPING 14,000 HORSEPOWER.

"DENISON" IS EXPECTED TO BE THE FIRST OPERATIONAL, OCEAN-GOING HYDROFOIL SHIP IN THE WORLD. WHEN COMPLETED SHE WILL BE USED AS A PASSENGER VESSEL IN 1963 ON THE TOURIST ROUTE TO THE BAHAMAS.
