  • Description

Spring temperatures in southern Germany have resulted in a thaw which has brought extensive flooding in towns and cities situated on the rivers Mosel and Rhine.

In Koblenz, on the Mosel, emergency troops are maintaining essential communications by means of inflatable boats and other craft.

The Bundeshouse, Germany's Parliament, situated close to the banks of the Rhine, has not gone untouched. A wall of sandbags keeps the flood waters in check.

Riverside restaurants are inundated, as are many private dwellings, some with water nearly up to the roof. Main and side streets in some towns are reminiscent of Venice and its canal system.

Shipping on these important waterways has been severely restricted owing to difficulties of navigation, and the flooding of wharves.
