  • Description

More than 300 Girl Guides, including groups from as far afield as Norway, the United States and Australia, have gathered in Dar es Salaam for week-long celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Tanzania Girl Guides Association. The celebrations were officially opened on Wednesday (2 August) by the Minster for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Ndugu Tabitha Siwale.

SYNOPSIS: Most of the Guides had arrived the day before the official opening and when the Minister arrived she found the camp site set up and functioning like temporary village. During her opening address Ndugu Siwale told the Guides that it was their duty to help all people in need without discrimination. She also asked the Guides Association to make efforts to trace the eight founder-members of the Girl Guides Association who started the organisation at Moshi in August 1928. But, before the speeches there was entertainment as some of the groups at the Jubilee showed examples of their singing and dancing.

The Minster was not the only appreciative listener. The visiting Guides from Norway and the United States did not remain in the audience for the whole afternoon as they too entertained the Guides and guests at the officials opening.

But is was the girl from the host country who charmed their audience with displays of singing and dancing.
