  • Description

ANOTHER STAGE IN THE SOLITARY JOURNEY OF LONE YACHTSMAN LEONID TELIGA WAS REACHED ON MONDAY WHEN HE SAILED HIS YACHT 'OPTY' INTO DAKAR HARBOUR AFTER A FIVE-MONTH CROSSING OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

TELIGA, A 51-YEAR OLD POLISH NATIONAL, STARTED HIS MARATHON VOYAGE IN APRIL 1967 WHEN HE SET SAIL FROM LAS PALMAS TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC.

IN JULY 1967 HE PASSED THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL AND REACHED TAHITI JUST AFTER CHRISTMAS. HURRICANES PREVENTED HIM FROM LEAVING THE PACIFIC ISLANDS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BUT HE EVENTUALLY REACHED THE COAST OF WEST AFRICA AND THE SAFE HARBOUR OF DAKAR.

CROWDS TURNED OUT TO GREET THE INTREPID MARINER AND HE GAVE A PRESS CONFERENCE ON ARRIVAL. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HE HAD STEPPED ASHORE FROM HIS TINY YACHT SINCE LEAVING SUVA, FIJI, FIVE MONTHS AGO.

TELIGA SAID HE WAS PROUD TO FOLLOW IN THE WAKE OF SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER AND SIR ALEC ROSE, BRITAIN'S PRECEDING LONE SAILORS WHO HAVE COMPLETED ROUND-THE-WORLD SINGLE HANDED VOYAGES.

HE TOLD SENEGALESE NEWSMEN THAT HE HAD FINANCED PART OF HIS TRIP BY SELLING HIS OWN PAINTINGS, AND HIS MOST HAZARDOUS PERIOD WAS WHEN HE SUFFERED A RAGING FEVER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN.
